Born into a seafaring family in The Netherlands, Jorne Langelaan was working at sea by the time he was 12. In this conversation with Designers of Paradise host Erik van Lennep, Jorne explains how his love of ships become a love of sailing ships which led him to become Captain of the EcoClipper. He explains what a clipper ship is, how the concept has been modernized with new materials and approaches, and his vision of transporting cargo using the “endless power of the wind“.
Jorne explains about traditional shipping has become a ubiquitous part of global supply while externalizing serious environmental costs like oil spills and noise damage to animals. He imagines a world with a greater emphasis on local trade – where only 10% of goods are shipped instead of the current 90% – delivered, of course in eco-friendly sailing ships.
Erik and Jorne discuss implications of increasing local trade, how EcoClipper is getting funding, and opportunities for people to get involved – be a trainee, a sailor, a passenger, an investor or, if you have a product that needs shipping, a customer.
