People know something is going on. “Global Weirding” : all the snow, the tornadoes in strange places, bigger hurricanes, disappearing salmon … With so much evidence, so much urgency, why do we stay in ‘avoidance’ mode? What can we do about it?

That was the topic when Designers of Paradise host Erik van Lennep spoke with Vancouver-based Melissa Ruckmick. Melissa is a documentary film maker and communications researcher working to help other change-makers and responders to climate change.

Touching on broad topics — the sociology of climate change and implications of corporate structure — down to the more personal, like tweaking how we listen to the news, Erik and Melissa explore some of the language we need in this “time of turning.”

Speaking to the question of “who do we need to become, in order to deal with climate change”, Melissa talks about personal care, emphasizing the need to bring our technology use under control, the importance of getting more sleep, and how to reduce our stress levels. She reminds us that “moving slow” sometimes doesn’t mean a lot isn’t happening! This is just the ‘tip of an iceberg’ of what Melissa and Erik explore together (and even the iceberg makes an appearance!)

As she points out, it is important to feel hopeful.  See what feeds you.

Stay tuned for next time when Erik and Melissa expand on why we need to be literally playing in the sandbox of the natural world.
