The experience of composting with friends helped Josh Whiton realize that being kind to the planet could lead to a change in consciousness. Josh described to Designers of Paradise host Erik van Lennep how this realization led him to launch MakeSoil.org, a global movement and online platform where communities can make soil together.

Josh tells how his search for food scraps for his own compost led him to connect with his neighbors and the importance of doing meaningful things together. He explains that witnessing the evolution of food waste into rich living soil encourages people to be kind to the planet and to take responsibility to steward the earth.

Josh and Erik discuss the importance of creating, the drive to “produce” and not only consume, and how making soil starts a positive feedback loop with psychological, spiritual, and environmental outcomes. The objective of MakeSoil.org is to mainstream that experience. Josh describes the role of Soil Makers, who manage compost sites, and Soil Supporters who contribute food scraps to the Soil Makers. Check the map to find out if there is a Soil Maker near you.

They examine a core question – can people be a force for repair of the planet; can we be regenerative creatures? Can an obsession, like Josh’s obsession with compost, be part of our healing?
